Zal-Gaz Grotto Club to Host Regular Live Sessions, resuming on September 28

***NOTE TO FRIENDS & FANS…we’re taking a hiatus for the summer months, we’ll start back up with this in the fall…S.D.

...from March 23 at the ZGG. Gary Pareyt (bass), Louis (kybd), Mattie (sax), Steve (trpt), "Average" Johnson (v), Adam Kahana (guitar)

On Wednesday evening, September 28th, Ann Arbor’s Zal-Gaz Grotto Club (2070 W. Stadium Blvd.) will once again see Steve & Mattie DeDoes, together with their musical collaborator Louis Johnson, joining with other outstanding musicians to play some exciting arrangements of funk, motown, and popular jazz tunes. This regularly-occuring event is a unique opportunity for listeners to enjoy music that they won’t hear anyplace else.  Steve and his bandmates use these occasions to build repertoire for their performing ensembles – in particular, for Motor City Beat and the North Coast Horns.

On that last “Urban Renewal” session May 25th, this ensemble stunned the audience with exciting and unusual renditions of familiar songs – on this particular night, revealing a version of “Oops, I Did It Again” (made popular by Britney Spears, but brought to life here in a sophisticated, funk-based arrangement !).

If you come to “Urban Renewal”, you’ll hear catchy, unique versions of songs like “Build Me Up, Buttercup,” the Earth, Wind, and Fire classic, “Sun Goddess,” and a horn-fired treatment of the Alan Parsons Project song, “I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You.”  All performed in recent months…but be prepared for swing, rock, and more.  As our crowds have built, we expect that people will be getting up to dance in the future !

We continue to refer to this endeavor as our musical directions toward “Urban Renewal” (see updated flyer in .pdf format).

The Zal-Gaz Grotto Club provides a great setting for these events. While you’re hearing highly-entertaining, upbeat, and unique versions of tunes that you’ll know and will relate to, you can enjoy food and drinks provide by the ZGG.

Please be there !!! – on September 28th and in the future (on the 4th Wednesday of every month). We’ll start playing at 6:30, with some smooth funk-jazz that will get your foot tapping while you eat and drink. Then, as the night continues on (’til 9:30), we’ll be bringing combinations of horns, vocals, and invited musicians to the stage as we put out some serious grooves for you. Come for the whole night, or drop by for a few numbers.

A nominal $5 cover fee, and other monies collected at the door, creates a pot that goes to the musicians. Drinks, dinner, and other munchies that are purchased provide benefit to the Zal-Gaz Grotto Club (affiliated with the Masonic fraternity). Please support all of this! Guaranteed “bang for the buck”.

We really hope to see you there !  (access “Urban Renewal” flyer, in .pdf format).
