About the Song:

This song was originally composed by Basie’s longtime “rhythmic engine”, guitarist Freddie Green. A noteworthy recording of the tune was done a couple of decades back by the Manhattan Transfer, one which they co-titled “Until I Met You”. That group performed some vocalese to the instrumental solos from the original Basie recording.

In the version that we offer up here, we nod to each of these recordings, while also adapting the style to a more modern swing subdivision and a “little big-band treatment. Alto sax standout Mattie DeDoes, trombonist Keith Stevens, and yours truly on the piano provide noteworthy improv – and drummer David Taylor steps out with enthusiastic style while driving the tight rhythm section of the North Coast Horns. While this music was recorded a couple of years ago, we spent some recent hours in order to engineer and polish this recording – in a way that enhances the listening experience for this new release.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy “Corner Pocket.” What’s not to like ?? S.D.
