“Outside The Lines” is the second CD release for young saxophonist Mattias DeDoes. His first CD, “I’m A Player,” made a name for this Michigan-based prodigy while he was still in high school. ”Player” received regional radio airplay and introduced Mattie’s unique style to a broad audience of listeners, endearing him to many enthusiastic new fans.
Though opportunities for live performance have been limited – primarily due to Mattie’s outstanding athletic career – he has wowed audiences at major venues, shared the stage with name artists, and presented feature summer concerts to standing ovations. ”Once More Around The Horn in Ann Arbor,” was such an event, in August 2010, prior to Mattie’s departure for his college life…
At the time of this release, Mattie is in his freshman year at Oberlin (Ohio) College. The recording work on the “Lines” project was completed in January 2011, during his winter break. Recruited as a star pitcher and infielder for Oberlin’s baseball team, Mattie has still found time for musical study at Oberlin’s renowned conservatory in addition to his other academic pursuits. As a recognized recording artist, he is committed to presenting music that truly connects with its audience – satisfying expectations, but also reaching for new ground.
Whether blowin’ a memorable solo (hear for yourself !), or hurling a baseball (in high school, Mattie was an all-state player, and holds Michigan state pitching and hitting records; in college, he’s already garnering accolades), Mattie DeDoes is a talent to be reckoned with – and a “player” that you won’t forget !
Much like his debut CD, “I’m A Player,” this second release for Mattie DeDoes features his crisp, distinctive jazz-funk sound and his clever improvisations. With the help of outstanding arrangements supplied by Mattie’s dad, Steve (who draws from his lifetime legacy of original work and successful recordings), songs like “Birdland,” “Smooth Operator,” and “Bedtime Story,” pulsate with new life and thematic grooves.
The DeDoes’ make a point, however, of expanding their musical horizons as they go “Outside The Lines” in this new disc. Mattie and Steve get into some serious introspection and creative sax-piano dialogues as they tackle “Infant Eyes” and “When I Fall In Love” in the acoustic intimacy of Solid Sound Studios and the grand piano there. They also add bass and percussion accompaniment for a beautiful treatment of the standard, “When Sunny Gets Blue.”
From cool pockets, through straight ahead jazz…Mattie goes extra innings with his blues composition, “Turn Twelve” (fueled by young percussionist Don Gozzard on drums); then, the father-son duo extends itself even further through their unusual original work, “The Ghost In The Machine.” Starting off with a 7/8 riff, this composition builds into a modern, multi-meter melody that culminates with some serious, soulful, driving funk.
“Outside The Lines” wonderfully reflects the present artistic envelope of Mattie DeDoes. He is a soloist that not only lures the listener in, but now is clearly taking his audience on a magical trip. As he continues to “put it out there,” we should all stay tuned -
